About the Workshop

“Join us for two days of experimentation and exploration of how to build things that combine usefulness, art, science, and whimsy, designed as an introduction to what you can create using a combination of software and hardware. No prior experience with electronics is required. We’ll use some open hardware components and some arts and crafts materials to work on a variety of projects. The workshop will cover three different projects, and you’re guaranteed success on each one.

First, we’ll work with paper and LEDs to create papercraft art that incorporates lights. Then, we’ll use LEDs and textiles to explore the basics of wearable computing and etextiles. Finally, we’ll work with open hardware prototyping boards and sensors (and potentially mobile phones) to give you an introduction of the many things possible when combining code and hardware.

When I say no hardware experience is necessary, I mean that. We will start from the beginning, and you’ll be surprised how quickly and easily basic elements can be grasped. The activities in the workshop are adapted from a project called Hackademia which introduces students from all backgrounds to handson technical skills. You can learn a bit more at hackademia.com.”
