This lecture by Dr. Beth Kolko, jointly organized by ICFOSS and IEEE's Women in Engineering (WiE) Affinity Group, addresses elements of human-computer interaction (HCI) with an emphasis on how human centered design (HCD) can assist in building technologies for a better world. The talk begins with a brief exploration of HCI and HCD theoretical backgrounds, and then addresses the methodological approaches found in these fields, focusing on how both theory and methods can be framed to ensure the needs of diverse audiences are being met. The talk will then provide a series of examples of how the HCD process informed the development of a series of technologies, including a low-cost ultrasound system, a grass-roots public transportation information system, and a mobile website design for a local transit agency.
