Workshop on Learning Needs of Visually impaired students
ICFOSS conducted a workshop on "Learning Needs of Visually impaired
students" on 8th April 2021 at the Government school for the Visually
Impaired, Vazhuthacaud, Trivandrum, Kerala. This was conducted as part
of the ICFOSS Assistive Technology team initiative for the betterment
and upliftment of the visually impaired community. The workshop was
inaugurated by Dr Elizabeth Sherly, Director, ICFOSS. Shri Abdul Hakeem,
Headmaster, Government school for the Visually Impaired, Vazhuthacaud
gave the background and overview of the Workshop. The workshop was
attended by the experts from various schools for visually impaired in
Kerala and the Assistive Technology team of ICFOSS. The Assistive
Technology team of ICFOSS introduced two assistive devices that support
the learning of visually impaired students. These devices were designed,
developed and 3D printed in-house by the Assistive Technology team of
ICFOSS. These devices were developed as part of "AKSHI"(meaning eye),
which is a concept developed by ICFOSS to assist the visually impaired. The
experts present in the workshop conveyed the challenges faced by the
visually impaired and also appreciated the devices introduced by ICFOSS.
The experts suggested that these devices with few refinements need to
be implemented in the schools for the visually impaired. The experts
also pointed out the need for associating with ICFOSS and continuing the
research and development activities started by ICFOSS.
