Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has extended its academic reach by granting recognition and accreditation to several prestigious institutions across India, including the International Centre for Free and Open Source Software (ICFOSS). This affiliation enhances JNU's national character and fosters collaboration between the university and ICFOSS.
ICFOSS, established by the Government of Kerala, serves as a nodal organization for free software activities in the state and maintains international connections. The centre has been approved as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (SIRO) by the Department of Scientific & Industrial Research, Government of India.
As a JNU-recognized Research Centre, ICFOSS now offers research opportunities in multidisciplinary areas such as Computational Linguistics, Computer Science (including Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Data Science), Management, and Entrepreneurship. This partnership allows for mutual participation in academic bodies and collaborative research initiatives, benefiting students, academicians, and the broader FOSS community.

Swatantra Incubator, launched in 2019 by the International Centre for Free and Open Source Software (ICFOSS) in collaboration with Kerala Startup Mission, is a unique incubator exclusively dedicated to Free and Open Source Software/Hardware (FOSS/H) startups. Located at the Swatantra facility, this innovative hub welcomes entrepreneurs who have experienced the transformative power of FOSS in their lives.
The incubator provides a nurturing environment for FOSS/H startups, offering access to state-of-the-art software and hardware research labs, pre-incubation facilities, and expert mentorship. Startups can leverage ICFOSS's applied research activities to enhance their solutions and overcome common challenges in the industry.
